  • What a GLP changes and what it doesn’t
  • How nervous system work leads to lasting results with or without the medication

These Episodes Are for You If

  • You’re losing weight on a GLP and still don’t feel better
  • You feel flat, unmotivated, or “meh” since starting the medication
  • You’re afraid of what happens if your dose changes or insurance stops covering it
  • You know weight loss is about more than the number on the scale

What you'll hear

Weight is a symptom

The most effective weight-loss tool we’ve ever had still doesn’t address the most common reason we gain weight. In twenty years I have never once met someone with a lifelong weight struggle who didn’t have a story of stress or trauma underneath it and a nervous system that uses food to respond.

The tool, not the answer

Losing weight and being happy in a smaller body are two separate things. This episode cautions against what happens when a very strong bandaid gets mistaken for healing and also what is possible for the people who do both at once!

Why you feel flat

Apathy and anhedonia are not the same thing, and dopamine isn’t pleasure — it’s the motivation to go find it. What blunted reward circuitry feels like day to day, and the nervous-system work that gives you a way out.

You Don’t Have a Willpower Problem, and That Is Why This Is Fixable

For most women, food has been doing a second job: handling stress. The hard day at work. The years of taking care of everyone but yourself. Your nervous system learned that food brings relief, and it has been sending you there ever since.

A GLP quiets that pull toward food, which is why the weight finally comes off. But the stress the food was soothing is still there, and without addressing it, it shows up somewhere else. You feel flat. You’re snappy with the people you love. You feel more anxious about other things in your life. And you’re afraid of what happens if the medication ever stops.

Nervous system work addresses the stress itself. When your body learns to handle stress without needing food, the pull to eat loses its grip on its own. The flatness lifts, and the weight stays off because you’ve healed the reason you were eating, whether you stay on the medication or not.

“Yes, food noise is loud, but food noise is in response to something. When we just turn down the food noise and don’t deal with what it was in response to, now you have the stress without the bandaid.”

The Part the Prescription Cannot Do

Eliza Kingsford is a licensed psychotherapist, nervous system expert, stress and trauma specialist, and best selling author. She holds a master’s in clinical psychology with postgraduate training in applied neuroscience and the nervous system.

She started her career in eating disorder treatment programs. Since then, she’s spent more than 20 years working with women struggling with overweight and obesity as a clinician, author and nationally recognized speaker and presenter.

Although she does not prescribe GLP-1 medications in her practice, she does support hundreds of women who are currently taking them. Her work is the part the prescription cannot do: healing the reason you reached for food in the first place, so the weight loss lasts.
