Why Behavior Change Is So Hard

Have you ever found yourself thinking, "I know exactly what I'm doing while I'm doing it… so why can't I stop?"
Maybe it's emotional eating after a stressful day. Maybe it's skipping the workout you genuinely intended to do. Maybe it's reaching for your phone instead of going for a walk or forgetting to take a supplement you know is good for you.
If you've ever experienced that disconnect between what you want to do and what you actually do, you're not alone.
More importantly, nothing is wrong with you.
This is one of my favorite topics because it's something I discuss every single week with clients inside my programs. While it often shows up around food and weight loss, it isn't unique to those struggles. This is part of being human. Every one of us has experienced the frustration of wanting to change a behavior but somehow ending up right back where we started.
Understanding why that happens is incredibly freeing.
Because once you understand what's actually happening inside your brain and nervous system, you can stop blaming yourself and you can finally begin to shift it.
If Knowing Better Were Enough, We'd All Change Overnight
Our culture loves the phrase, "Once you know better, you'll do better." While I understand the sentiment and have an immense amount of respect for Maya Angelou who is often credited with a version of the saying, the statement is incomplete. It’s true; you can't do better until you know better, but knowing better is only the first step.
If information alone led to behavior change, no one would struggle with healthy eating, exercising consistently, managing stress, or getting enough sleep. We already know these things are good for us.
Yet millions of intelligent, successful, well-intentioned people continue struggling with the same habits year after year. That tells us something important.
The problem isn't a lack of information. The problem is that behavior change is far more complex than we've been taught.
A Powerful Example of How Information Alone is Just Not Enough
One of the most fascinating examples of how information falls short comes from research on people who have suffered a heart attack.
Think about that for a moment.
A heart attack is one of the most frightening experiences a person can go through. It's a life-changing event that forces people to confront their own mortality. One might assume surviving something like that would create enough motivation to permanently change unhealthy habits that have been shown to lead to cardiac events. But the research tells a different story.
After a heart attack, physicians typically recommend three major lifestyle changes: exercise regularly, eat a heart-healthy diet, and take prescribed medications consistently. Simple enough, right? Follow doctors orders and you can hopefully prevent another heart attack. Unfortunately, reality looks very different.
Exercise
Patients are strongly encouraged to participate in cardiac rehabilitation because regular movement dramatically reduces the risk of another cardiac event. Yet only a fraction of eligible patients complete these structured rehabilitation programs. We’re talking less than half.
Even more telling, many of those who successfully complete rehabilitation gradually stop exercising once the formal program ends. They know exercise helps. They believe it matters. They genuinely intend to keep going. Yet over time, they drift back toward the exact behaviors they had before the heart attack.
Diet
Doctors also provide very clear nutritional guidance: reduce saturated fat, increase fruits and vegetables, and maintain a healthy weight. These recommendations alone aren't confusing. Most patients fully understand what they're supposed to do. Yet long-term adherence remains surprisingly poor. Again, it isn't because people don't care. It isn't because they don't believe their doctor. And it certainly isn't because they want another heart attack. It's because behavior change isn't driven by knowledge alone.
The Statistic That Surprised Even Me
The most astonishing finding, in my opinion, involves medication adherence. Think about what's being asked. Not an hour-long workout. Not preparing elaborate meals. Simply taking a pill once or twice each day. Something that takes only a few seconds. And yet, research consistently shows that roughly half of patients fail to take medications that significantly reduce their risk of another cardiac event.
That statistic stopped me in my tracks.
I've studied behavior change for years, and even I found that remarkable. Because these medications lower blood pressure, reduce stroke risk, help prevent additional heart attacks, and improve long-term health outcomes. People know this. They want those benefits. Yet many still don't consistently take the medication. Why?
Because behavior change isn't simply a matter of deciding to do something differently.
This Shows Up in Everyday Life, Too
I can relate to this myself. There are supplements I genuinely want to take. I believe they're beneficial. I fully intend to take them. But if I don't intentionally design my environment to support creating that new habit, I'll forget. Not because I don't care. Not because I lack discipline. Not because I suddenly decided those supplements aren't important. I forget because my brain is wired for sameness. And that's exactly what it's designed to be.
Every meaningful behavior change requires us to become someone new and do something we’re not currently used to doing. This takes energy, attention, and intention. Those are valuable resources. Which means your brain doesn't spend them casually. That's where the real conversation begins. Because if information isn't enough…If motivation isn't enough… If even surviving a heart attack isn't always enough…
Then what actually determines whether we're able to change?
The answer lies in understanding how your brain and nervous system work together.
Your Brain Isn't Trying to Sabotage You, It's Trying to Save Energy
If you've been following me for a while, you already know that nearly everything comes back to the nervous system. Your nervous system includes your brain, your spinal cord, and the network of nerves that connects your brain to the rest of your body. They're not separate systems operating independently, they're constantly communicating with one another, influencing how you think, feel, and behave.
While there are two major components to creating lasting behavior change—safety in the nervous system and predictive patterns in the brain, I want to focus this article on the brain and the role it plays in making behavior change so difficult. Because once you understand your brain's primary job, so many frustrating behaviors begin to make sense.
Most of us assume our brain exists to help us carry out what we want to do in life - thinking, reasoning, decision making. In reality, your brain's primary job is much simpler than that: to keep you alive while using as little energy as possible.
That sentence changes everything.
Every single thing you do throughout the day requires energy. Thinking requires energy. Making decisions requires energy. Walking, talking, solving problems, managing stress, regulating emotions, getting dressed, making dinner, and navigating relationships all require energy. Even your emotional experiences come with an energetic cost. Something needs to keep track of your body’s energy budget; ie: how much energy you have and how much energy you will need to carry out these functions every day. So whose job is it to do that?
You guessed it, your brain.
One of your brain's primary responsibilities is balancing what neuroscientists often refer to as your body's "energy budget." Without you ever realizing it, your brain is constantly estimating how much energy you'll need to get through the day. It considers everything on your schedule—from work meetings and family responsibilities to your stress levels, emotional state, and even whether you're dealing with conflict at home or pressure at work.
So where does your brain get the information it needs to make those calculations?
It looks to the past.
Everything you've done yesterday, last week, last month, and over the course of your life provides your brain with information about what today is likely to require. Without your conscious awareness, it's constantly making predictions based on your previous experiences.
It predicts what you'll eat after work. It predicts how you'll respond to stress. It predicts whether you'll exercise, scroll your phone, comfort yourself with food, or head straight to the couch. It even predicts how you'll think and feel in familiar situations.
These predictions aren't random. They're one of the brain's most efficient tools for conserving energy; therefore keeping you alive.
Imagine if your brain had to carefully analyze every decision from scratch each day. What should I eat? Should I exercise? How should I respond to this stressful email? Do I have enough energy for everything I need to accomplish today?
That would be metabolically expensive.
Instead, your brain creates shortcuts. It predicts what you're most likely to do based on what you've done before. Those predictions allow it to conserve valuable energy because it doesn't have to constantly make new decisions.
This is one of the reasons habits feel so effortless. Once a behavior becomes automatic, it requires very little conscious thought. By definition, a habit is something you no longer have to think about. You simply do it. From your brain's perspective, that's incredibly efficient.
Here’s Where Things Get Interesting
Now imagine your doctor tells you that you need to start exercising every morning.
Your conscious mind immediately agrees.
"That's a good idea. I'm going to start tomorrow."
But another part of your brain begins asking a completely different set of questions.
How much energy is that going to require?
What will that cost me?
Will there be enough left over for everything else I have to do today?
Your brain doesn't yet have reliable data for this new behavior. It doesn't know how much energy the change will require or how it will affect the rest of your day. And because uncertainty is metabolically expensive, your brain naturally resists it.
This isn't self-sabotage. It's efficiency. Your brain is doing exactly what it evolved to do.
This is where the concept of homeostasis becomes so important. Homeostasis is your brain and body's natural tendency to maintain stability. In other words. Don’t change. Stay exactly the same. Familiar patterns are predictable, and predictable patterns are efficient.
If you've spent years stress eating after work, your brain knows exactly how much energy that routine requires. If you've spent years collapsing onto the couch instead of going for a walk, that prediction has become highly efficient as well. Even forgetting to take medication or skipping a supplement can become part of an established pattern. The more often a behavior repeats, the stronger your brain's prediction becomes.
Then one day you decide to completely overhaul your life.
You're going to eliminate sugar. Exercise five days a week. Meditate every morning. Stop emotional eating. Start meal prepping. Become a completely different version of yourself.
From your conscious mind, these sound like wonderful goals. Your prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain responsible for planning, decision-making, and problem-solving—is fully on board.
But to the more primitive parts of your brain, all of those changes represent uncertainty. They require new predictions. They require additional energy. And because your brain's job is to protect your energy budget, it begins nudging you back toward what's familiar. That's why the couch suddenly feels so inviting. Why motivation seems to disappear. Why you feel unusually tired just before it's time to exercise. Why the habits you've been trying to break somehow feel easier than the new ones you're trying to build.
These aren't signs that you're lazy, undisciplined, or lacking willpower. They're signs that your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Once you understand that, the conversation changes completely. The question is no longer, "What's wrong with me?"The better question becomes:
"How do I teach my brain that this new behavior is safe, sustainable, and worth the energy it requires?"
That's where lasting behavior change begins.
Why Willpower Isn't Enough
At this point, you might be thinking, "Okay… so if my brain is wired to keep me the same, what am I supposed to do?" The answer isn't to try harder through force. In fact, that's often the very thing that keeps people stuck.
Most of us have been taught that change is simply a matter of making a decision and following through. We believe that if we're motivated enough, disciplined enough, or committed enough, we should be able to white-knuckle our way through any behavior change. But that approach ignores the way our physiology actually works.
When we decide to make new changes we're asking our prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for planning and decision-making, to overpower a nervous system that hasn't been brought along for the ride.
For a little while, that can work. You might feel highly motivated and even experience some early success. But eventually, as your extra motivation and willpower runs out and the rest of your life continues to demand what it’s always demanded of you, your brain begins to recognize just how much energy those new changes require. It starts protecting its energy budget by nudging you back toward what's familiar. Suddenly the new routine feels exhausting. Motivation fades. Old habits begin creeping back in, not because you've failed, but because your brain is doing exactly what it was designed to do - bring you back to what it knows.
This is why so many New Year's resolutions don't last. It's why restrictive diets often work for a few weeks or months before people find themselves slipping back into old patterns. And it's why so many people conclude that they simply "lack discipline."
The problem isn't discipline. The problem is trying to change your behavior without changing the underlying predictions your brain has already made.
When Your Brain Learns to Predict Failure
Here's where this becomes especially interesting and, for many people, deeply validating - even if it’s disappointing at first. Your brain isn't just learning your habits. It's also learning your patterns.
Imagine you've spent years dieting. Each time, you make a promise to yourself that this time will be different. You follow the plan faithfully for a while. Maybe it's a few weeks. Maybe it's several months. Then life gets stressful. You miss a workout. You overeat one weekend. You tell yourself you've blown it, and eventually you find yourself back in your old routines.
If that cycle repeats enough times, your brain begins to recognize it as the expected outcome. Instead of predicting that you'll become someone who eats differently, it predicts that you'll eventually return to your familiar behaviors.
Over time, that prediction becomes stronger.
The first diet might have lasted six months.
The next one lasts three.
Then one month.
Then two weeks.
Eventually, you find yourself thinking, "Why even bother? I already know how this ends." Many people interpret this as evidence that they've failed too many times or that they're simply incapable of changing. I see it very differently.
What you're experiencing is your brain becoming increasingly efficient. It's learned the pattern you've practiced, not because you're incapable of change, but because that's exactly what brains do. They predict what comes next based on what they've experienced before.
Unfortunately, this often leads to something psychologists call learned helplessness. After enough unsuccessful attempts, it begins to feel as though nothing you do will ever make a difference. That feeling can be incredibly discouraging, but it isn't the truth.
It's simply another prediction. And predictions can change.
The Missing Piece: Teaching Your Brain That Change Is Safe
This is where so much traditional behavior-change advice falls short. Most programs focus almost entirely on changing behavior. Very few teach you how to change the predictions driving that behavior.
Lasting change doesn't happen because you force yourself to override your nervous system. It happens because you teach your brain and body to work together.
Remember, your brain is part of your nervous system. They're constantly exchanging information. Whenever your brain encounters something new, one of its first questions is, "Is this safe? Do we have the capacity for this? Can we afford the energy this will require?"
When your nervous system can confidently answer, "Yes. We're safe. We can handle this," everything begins to shift. Your brain starts updating its predictions.
Instead of constantly trying to pull you back toward familiar habits, it slowly begins recognizing the new behavior as the safer, more efficient path. That's when change begins to feel less like a battle and more like a process of learning.
This is why lasting behavior change doesn't rely on endless self-control. It relies on creating enough safety that your brain no longer perceives change as a threat.
A New Path Can Become Your Default
One of the most remarkable things about the brain is that it doesn't just learn unhealthy habits. It can learn healthy ones, too. The same predictive system that once led you toward emotional eating can eventually guide you toward eating in a way that feels calm, intentional, and aligned with your goals.
The same brain that automatically suggested the couch after work can eventually begin nudging towards movement.
The same nervous system that once relied on food for comfort can learn entirely new ways of creating safety and regulation.
That doesn't happen overnight. It takes intention. It takes repetition. And it takes working with your physiology instead of constantly fighting against it. But once your brain begins recognizing those new patterns, it starts doing what it's always done: it predicts them.
And when your brain predicts healthier behaviors, those behaviors require less effort. They stop feeling like something you have to force yourself to do. Instead, they begin to feel like the next natural choice.
The Big Takeaway
If you've spent years feeling frustrated with yourself because your actions haven't matched your intentions, I hope you'll remember this:
You are not broken.
Your inability to change your patterns isn't a character flaw. It isn't a lack of motivation. It isn't evidence that you'll never be successful. It's a reflection of how your brain and nervous system were designed to protect you.
The encouraging news is that our brains are remarkably adaptable. When we understand how they're making predictions, conserving energy, and responding to signals from the nervous system, we can begin working with those processes instead of constantly fighting against them.
The science behind behavior change is complex. The path forward doesn't have to be.
When you learn to teach your brain that change is safe, sustainable, and worth the energy it requires, changing patterns becomes possible. Not because you've suddenly found more discipline or willpower, but because you've taught your brain to predict a different future. And that's where real, lasting behavior change begins.
