Before You Start Another Diet, Read This First

Dec 04, 2025

Let me ask you a question.

Have you ever thrown yourself headfirst into a new diet—meal-prepped for hours, downloaded the fitness tracker, cleared your pantry of “bad” foods—and felt so ready to finally lose the weight?

Then life happened.

Stress at work, family obligations, a wave of exhaustion... and suddenly, you’re back in the freezer, ice cream spoon in hand, wondering why you just can't seem to stick to the plan.

Sound familiar?

If it does, I want you to hear this: you are not a failure, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with your willpower. You’ve been trying to play in the weight loss Super Bowl without ever learning how to play the game first!

Let’s unpack that.

Why Traditional Weight Loss Advice Fails So Many of Us

For decades, the health and wellness industry has sold us a very narrow idea of what it takes to lose weight:

  • Eat less.

  • Move more.

  • Repeat until skinny.

But after years of coaching clients, watching people lose and regain weight like clockwork, I realized something critical: Mastering the fundamentals of weight loss need to come before you can play in the big game.

Let me explain…..

Changing your diet and exercise are the main events in weight loss, like the Super Bowl in football. You only play in the Super Bowl after you’ve learned the fundamentals of the game and are ready to pay at the highest level. With weight loss most people are trying to play in the Super Bowl before they’ve mastered the fundamentals.

Put another way, when you don’t master the fundamentals first, all of your efforts get drained like leaky holes in the bottom of a bucket.

It’s about what’s underneath those dieting behaviors that keep you stuck—the hidden patterns and emotional triggers that sabotage our best efforts. I call these the leaky holes in your bucket.

What Are the Leaky Holes in Your Bucket?

Imagine you’re trying to fill a bucket with water. No matter how fast or how often you pour, if there are holes at the bottom, the water won’t stay.

In your weight loss journey, these holes show up as:

  • Turning to food when life gets difficult or stressful.

  • All or nothing patterns (on a diet or off a diet anyone?)

  • Difficulty bouncing back from setbacks. “I blew it, why bother trying again”
  •
  • Unhealthy habits that seem impossible to break (habits are habits for a reason! They are not so simple to change!)

Diet and exercise pour water in—but those deeper issues? They’re the holes where progress leaks out.

Why Diet and Exercise Are the Super Bowl

Let’s use a sports analogy (don’t worry, it works even if you hate football).

Diet and exercise are like playing in the Super Bowl—the most elite, high-pressure game of the year. You wouldn’t send a rookie to the Super Bowl before they’d ever practiced the basics, right?

So why do we expect ourselves to jump into a strict eating plan and workout regimen before we've even addressed the foundational skills that make those changes sustainable?

The 3 Foundational Skills You're Probably Missing

Let’s get into some real talk. If you're stuck in the cycle of yo-yo dieting, chances are you haven’t mastered these weight loss fundamentals:

1. Coping with Stress Without Food

Can you confidently say you can face life’s challenges without turning to food?

If not, you’re not alone. Food has become our most accessible, socially acceptable coping mechanism. But it doesn’t actually solve the stress, grief, boredom, or anxiety does it? It just delays the discomfort—and often adds guilt to the mix.

This isn’t about “resisting” temptation. It’s about learning new ways to soothe your nervous system that don’t involve a snack drawer.

2. Eating with Relative Consistency

If your eating pattern looks like “clean” Monday through Thursday and “chaotic” Friday through Sunday, we’ve got some work to do.

Weight loss isn’t about perfection. It’s about relative consistency—eating in a way that feels stable and sustainable, not swinging between extremes. And all those diets you keep committing to on Monday? They’re only making it worse.

3. Bouncing Back After Setbacks

Vacations, holidays, sick kids, busy work weeks—life happens.

The question isn’t whether you’ll face setbacks. It’s how quickly you can bounce back.

Resilience in weight loss looks like having a plan that bends, not breaks. It means you trust yourself to return to your habits without needing a restart or a punishment detox.

But if you don’t have healthy habits established in the first place, what makes you think forcing yourself to commit to your next strict program is suddenly going to make those habits fall into place?

Master the Fundamentals First

If you’ve spent the last 5, 10, or even 20 years hyper-focused on finding the “perfect” diet, I want to gently suggest: maybe you’ve been training for the Super Bowl without ever learning how to play.

That’s not your fault.

You were taught that more discipline and a tighter meal plan were the answers. But real transformation begins when you stop trying to out-diet your patterns and start retraining them from the ground up.

What Happens When You Flip the Script?

My clients who go through this process—who focus on the internal fundamentals before the external behaviors—tell me they feel something they haven’t felt in years:

Peace.

They describe a deep, physical exhale. A sense of ease around food. Joy in their bodies. Freedom from the shame spiral.

And yes—when they put those newly acquired skills towards nutrition and fitness goals, those efforts actually stick.

That’s because they’ve plugged the holes in their leaky bucket. The water holds. And they’re ready for the next level of their journey!

You Can’t Diet Away Emotional Patterns

If your strategy for weight loss is to keep trying harder at the same thing, I invite you to pause.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I managing emotions without food?

  • Am I eating with relative consistency?

  • Can I bounce back when life gets messy?

If not, don’t reach for a new diet.

Start learning the fundamentals.

And next time you step onto the field, you just might find you’re finally ready to win your own weight loss Super Bowl.
